چکیده
The phenomenon we discuss is illustrated by the contrast in (1)-(8) (we use coindexing to indicate intuitive binding): (1) ??Every dog i came in. It i lay down under the table. (2) *If every cat i purrs, it i is happy. (3) *If John owes every man i money then Sam pays him i. Hornstein, 1984] (4) *John likes every dog i and Sam feeds it i. Hornstein, 1984] (5) Every story i pleases these children. If it i is about animals, they are excited, if it i is about witches, they are enchanted, and if it i is about humans, they never want me to stop. Belvadi, 1989] (6) Each degree candidate i walked to the stage. He i took his diploma from the dean and returned to his i seat. (Partee, from Roberts, 1987]) (7) Each student i in the syntax class was accused of cheating on the exam and he i was reprimanded by the dean. Fodor and Sag, 1982] (8) Each candidate i for the space mission meets all our requirements. He i has a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and extensive prior ight experience. Roberts, 1987] Data of the type in (1)-(4) led Heim (Heim, 1982], p.204) to assume the Scope Constraint: quantiiers cannot take scope beyond the clause in which they appear at S-structure. Yet, (5)-(8) involve an occurrence of a singular pronoun which is in some sense anaphorically related to a universal quantiier in the previous sentence. Roberts 1987] called this phenomenon telescoping. 2 Why Telescoping is a Problem In the Kamp/Heim approach, (i) quantiiers are unable to bind variables outside their scope at S-structure, (ii) indeenite NP's have no quantiicational This paper appears in C. Barker and D.

Trading order for degree in creative telescoping
We analyze the differential equations produced by the method of creative telescoping applied to a hyperexponential term in two variables. We show that equations of low order have high degree, and that higher order equations have lower degree. More precisely, we derive degree bounding formulas which allow to estimate the degree of the output equations from creative telescoping as a function of t...
متن کاملFast Algorithms for Refined Parameterized Telescoping in Difference Fields
Parameterized telescoping (including telescoping and creative telescoping) and refined versions of it play a central role in the research area of symbolic summation. In 1981 Karr introduced ΠΣ -fields, a general class of difference fields, that enables one to consider this problem for indefinite nested sums and products covering as special cases, e.g., the (q–)hypergeometric case and their mixe...
متن کاملCombinatorial telescoping for an identity of Andrews on parity in partitions
Following the method of combinatorial telescoping for alternating sums given by Chen, Hou and Mu, we present a combinatorial telescoping approach to partition identities on sums of positive terms. By giving a classification of the combinatorial objects corresponding to a sum of positive terms, we establish bijections that lead a telescoping relation. We illustrate this idea by giving a combinat...
متن کاملComparison of Two Treatment Methods “One Shot” and “Sequential” on Reduction the Level of Hemoglobin in Patients with Percutaneous Nephrolithotripsy in Al Zahra Hospital in 2012–2013
BACKGROUND Access dilation is the most important part of percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL) that is done by different methods, especially metal telescoping and one shot. In this study, two different methods of access dilation one shot and telescoping were compared. MATERIALS AND METHODS In observational cross-sectional study, 240 patients who were a candidate for PCNL were selected and ran...
متن کاملReduction-Based Creative Telescoping for Fuchsian D-finite Functions1
Continuing a series of articles in the past few years on creative telescoping using reductions, we adapt Trager’s Hermite reduction for algebraic functions to fuchsian D-finite functions whose singularities have real exponents. We develop a reduction-based creative telescoping algorithm for this class of functions, thereby generalizing our recent reduction-based algorithm for algebraic function...
متن کاملThe role of guessing and boundaries on date estimation biases.
This study investigates the causes of event-dating biases. Two hundred participants provided knowledge ratings and date estimates for 64 news events. Four independent groups dated the same events under different boundary constraints. Analysis across all responses showed that forward telescoping decreased with boundary age, concurring with the boundary-effects model. With guesses removed from th...
